The Garth | Prior to Now on Combe Down

This month the Church Road Villas, a Viking and Directories are what it’s about.

The Victorian villas on Church Road, Combe Down have, now, been covered:

Combe Lodge – which was used by Monkton Combe School and also occupied by Lady Selina Octavia Stewart (1851 – 1938) a grand daughter of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781 – 1826) FRS who founded Singapore
Welford House – also used by Monkton Combe School
The Brow – occupied by the Daubeney family for many years who can trace their ancestry back to a Viking: Ivar Halfdansson (c. 757 – 824), Jarl of The Uplands via Richard “Sans-Peur” Fitz William (933–996), Duke of Normandy and a grandfather of William the Conqueror.

Scott House – Maria Mosley (1840 – 1917), a cousin of Sir Oswald Ernald Mosley (1896 – 1980) 6^th Baronet Ancoats the founding leader of the British Union of Fascists, lived here.
Southfield – William Franklin who started Combe Down School was amongst the people who lived here.
The Garth – Annie Maria Donisthorpe (née Anderson) (1855 – 1930) divorced from Wordsworth Donisthorpe (1847 – 1914) who filed a patent for a movie camera in 1876 many years before anyone else.

Glenburnie – Thomas Cruttwell (1808 – 1881), the son of Thomas Macaulay Cruttwell (1777 – 1848) and Mary Micklem (1786 – 1849) lived here and in 1922 Glenburnie was acquired by Monkton Combe Junior School, though it has recently been sold by them.
