BIRD STARVER'S" DEATH AT 95
Well-known Resident of Combe Down
A well-known Combe Down resident, Mr. William Fisher, of 1, Stonehouse Terrace, died on
Jan. 21st in a Frome hospital at the age of 95.
Mr. Fisher was born at Withyditch, near Dunkerton, whither his father went from Combe Hay.
When he first started work as a "bird starver" at Withyditch, near Dunkerton - scaring rooks
and other birds off the growing corn - he would get up before 4.30 every morning to be on the
fields early.
When he was a few years old. the family moved to Tucking Mill, near Midford, Claverton, and finally to Bath.
When he lived at Claverton and Tucking Mill he was employed as a plasterer and mason in Bath. When Mr. Fisher moved to Bath he was employed by
Rogers (now Perrin's) monumental masons.
All his family have lived a long, time. His father was 92 and his mother 86 when they died.
He leaves one sister, Mrs. Gerrish, of Batheaston.
