COMBE DOWN RESIDENT
Death of Mr. William Buckland
Well-known and respected in the district. M. William Buckland, Claremont Cottage, De Montalt Place, Combe Down, died on Monday after a long illness.
He was 85 years of age and one of Combe Down's oldest inhabitants.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters his wife having died about 12 years ago.
He was born in Northamptonshire, and for a short time was an assistant schoolmaster at St. Paul's School, Bedminster. Bristol. From there he went on to Mathern, near Chepstow, where he was schoolmaster for nearly 40 years. When he retired he came to live at Bath, originally residing at Weston for a short time before going to Combe Down, where he lived for
some 24 years.
He was a chorister at Holy Trinity Parish Church, being a regular attendant there, and hardly ever missed a service, morning or evening; he had also been a chorister at Mathern,
The church and amateur gardening were his chief interests. At Mathern he won prizes at a great
number of shows.
He was a cousin of Mr. L. E. Snelgrove, school inspector of Somerset, and is survived by
three sons and two daughter His wife died about 12 years ago.
