Accidental Death Verdict at Maidenhead Inquest
We deeply regret to report that Dr. Vincent Coates. of Bath, was found on the G.W.R. mainline line between Paddington and Bath when the midnight express in which he had been travelling was stopped near Reading in the early the hours of Wednesday morning. A search party found him near Maidenhead, but he died in hospital before his wife who was immediately summoned from Bath, could arrive.
WHEN THE EXPRESS WAS PASSING MAIDENHEAD THE SIGNALMAN NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE CARRIAGE DOORS WAS OPEN. HE STOPPED THE TRAIN AT TWYFORD, AND A SEARCH ON THE LINE WAS MADE, WITH THE RESULT STATED. AT THE INQUEST ON THURSDAY EVENING A VERDICT DEATH WAS RETURNED.
Dr Coates a former rugby international wing threequarter, was one of the foremost young physicians of the day, and his work in those who suffer from rheumatic diseases will be a lasting testimonial to him. for a man of only 45, his career has been phenomenal. He has had the energy of youth which did credit to his talents and benefited research and humanity at large.
