Obituary For Ralph Allen

(1693 – 29 June 1764)

On the 29th ult. died, of an inflammation in his bowels. which turned to a mortification, Ralph Allen, Esq; aged 72, at his seat at Prior Park, near Bath.

He was quite sensible and resigned to the last, and so composed, ever in the most excruciating pain, that he asked his physicians the day before he died, when no hopes of his recovery remained, how many hours they thought he might live, which they told him pretty nearly.

He then thanked them for their attendance, and desired they would leave him.

He was universally known to have lived in the constant practice of every virtue that does honour to humanity.

His ample fortune, acquired in the prosecution of a plan of his own invention for the improvement of the revenue of the Post office, highly beneficial to his country, was spent in a splendid but decent hospitality, and in the relief of a great variety of objects of compassion.
