Obituary For Lewis Henry Straw

WON MILITARY MEDAL AT 18

Death of Mr L. Straw, of Combe Down

The death occurred suddenly at Mr, Lewis Henry Straw, M.M., of Brierley Cottage. Combe Down, Bath.

Mr. Straw came from a very old Derbyshire family. His early childhood was spent at Coleshill, Warwickshire.

At the age of 15 he entered the engineering firm of Lister's, Dursley, Glos, and at 17 joined the Gloucester Regiment, serving until the end of the Great War.

At the age of 18 he was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous services at High Wood, during the Battle of the Somme.

A member of the British Legion, he joined the Combe Down branch of the Home Guard at its formation and held the rank of corporal.

The Funeral

The funeral took place at Monkton Combe on Saturday. preceded by a service at Combe Down Parish Church which was conducted by the Rev. E Roberts.

The coffin. covered with Union Jack, was carried by six members of the Home Guard, under Corpl. Pearce, and others who formed a guard-of-honour at the entrance to the church were under Lieut. Cook

The family mourners were the Widow, Miss V. Straw (sister); Mr and Mrs. Knowle (father and mother-in-law), Messrs. R. Pearce N. Weeks and J. Cannings (friends). Mrs. Straw (mother) was unable to attend through ill-health.

Amongst the large congregation were Miss Jarrett, Major H M Howell and Mr. J Pitts (British
Legion).

Flowers

The floral tributes included family cross. To dear Lewis, from his wife, mother and sister, with
