Obituary For Leslie Smith

FAMILY'S DOUBLE LOSS.

Monkton Rovers' Player and His Father.

The funeral took place at Monkton Combe on Saturday, of Mr. Leslie Smith, the captain of
Monkton Rovers Reserves, at the age of 21. Mr. Smith was taken ill, and within a week died of double pneumonia.

He was greatly respected by the residents of Monkton Combe, and was very popular with his team and officials of the Club.

Recently he held the position of billiards secretary at The Hall.

A large number assembled at the church, and numerous friends followed. The coffin was borne by four playing members of the team, and representatives of the Club followed.

Wreaths, given by the Club and the Supporters' Club were placed at the graveside by Mr. Reg Edwards and Miss Russell respectively.

The floral tributes were numerous, and included, in addition to family and private tributes, "With deepest sympathy, from members of the Monkton Rovers' Supporters' Club"; "With deepest sympathy, from the Committee and playing members of the Monkton Rovers A.F.C."; and “With deepest sympathy, from his fellow workers.”

The death of Mr. Leslie Smith has caused great sadness in Monkton Combe, as in any way he could help in matters sporting or otherwise, he was always to the fore. The sympathy with the family has been deepened by the fact that Mr. Leslie Smith's father passed away at the Royal United Hospital on Sunday midday, following his son's funeral. Mr. Smith senior was also closely connected with Monkton Rovers A.F.C., being on the Committee, and a great worker for the Club. He leaves. a widow and several children.
