Obituary For Joseph Vernaum Whitaker

WELL-KNOWN AT COMBE DOWN

DEATH OF MR. JOS. WHITAKER

A well known resident at Combe Down, where he was born and which he helped to build. Mr. Joseph Whitaker has passed away.

He was 85 years of age, and his death took place at his home, 3, Lansdown View, Combe Down, Bath, on Sunday. after a short illness.

Mr. Whitaker was a mason by trade, and was also, for 20 years, the licensee of the King William, at Combe Down. He was one of the oldest members of the Prince of Wales Lodge A.O.F.

He was greatly attached to the Down, and there are many who will miss seeing him in the course of his daily walk.

Of late years his eyesight had failed, necessitating his living in retirement. His eldest son. Clarence Whitaker, played rugby for Bath for several years after the war, and was a brilliant full- back.

Another son, who served during the war, was killed in France.

Mr. Whitaker leaves a widow, five sons and three daughters.

The Funeral.

The funeral service was at Combe Down Parish Church on Thursday. The Vicar, the Rev. E.
Roberts, officiated, the organist being Mrs. Fletcher.

The chief mourners were: Messrs. Bert, Walter, Jack and Tom Whitaker and Mesdames Pearce, Brinkworth, and Seeney (sons and daughters); Mrs. Bartrum and Mrs. Short (sister and niece); Mr. F. Brinkworth, Mrs.. Clarence Whitaker and Mrs, J. Whitaker (son-in-law and daughters- in-law); Mrs, Walter Whitaker, Mrs. T. Whitaker (daughters-in-law); Miss Nellie Whitaker, Miss Babs Pearce and Mr. Donald Brinkworth (grand- children).

Amongst those present at the church were: Mrs. C. Pearce, Mrs. C. Whitaker, Mrs. E .G. Hayes, Mr. W. Pearce (brother-in-law). Mrs. J. Thomas, Mrs. W. Bishop. Mr. W. Wilcox. Mrs. J. Russell, Mrs. E. Bishop. Miss S. Bishop, Mr. and Mrs. A. Miles, Mr. J. E. Hancock. Miss A. Herbert, Mr. W. Fisher. Mr. G. Carter, Mr. and Mrs. Appleby, Mrs. J. Warren, Mrs. R.
Chivers, Mr. S. Morris (representing the A.O.F.), Mr. W. Whitaker, Mr. HE. Tyley, Mrs. A. Gerrish, Mrs. E Curtis, Miss D. Andrews, Mr. A. Bending and Mrs. E. Wicks.

The funeral arrangements carried out by Messrs. G. Mannings and Son. Combe Down, and
Wood Street, Bath.
