Obituary For John Williams

CRAFTSMAN OF THE OLD SCHOOL

Mr. J. Williams, Combe Down

By the death of Mr. John Williams on April 20th at his home, Sewell Cottage, Williamstowe, Combe Down loses a familiar figure, and the Bath Cabinet Makers, Ltd., an employee with long record ot service.

Mr. Williams, who was in his 71st year, was working at his trade up to a few weeks ago, and was his garden on the morning of his death.

He was born on the Down and resided there all his life.

Apprenticed at Whitaker's Cabinet Works, Combe Down, he was a craftsman of the old school, and worked for the Bath Cabinet Makers for years, for more than 20 of which was foreman.

He was, well-known amateur gardener and member the old Combe Down Horticultural Association and had won many prizes local shows. He held the Horticultural Society's medal, an honour falling to few amateurs.

Former Rugby Player. Mr. Williams served for a number of years on the Monkton Combe Parish Council, and a son, Mr. W. F. Williams, is one of the present members for the Combe Down Ward.

He was also an old Rugby footballer and a pioneer of the Combe Down club.

For many years a staunch Liberal, of late years he had given allegiance to the Labour Party.

He is survived his widow and three sons and four daughters. One son lost his life while serving with the Somerset Light Infantry Mesopotamia in 1917.

The funeral" took place Tuesday afternoon at Monkton Combe, preceded by a service Combe Down Church at 2.30 p.m-
