Obituary For James Walter Charter

COMBE DOWN RESIDENT

FUNERAL OF MR. J. W. CHARTER

The funeral of Mr. James Walter Charter of Heyford Villa, Williamstowe, Combe Down, Bath, who died on July 6th at the age of 79, took place in the little Gospel Hall at Williamstowe, with which he had been connected for so many years.

A native of Oxfordshire, where he was a local preacher for many years, Mr Charter came to
Combe Down for health reasons some 30 years ago.

A bootmaker by trade, he was one of the original trustees of the little Gospel Hall at Williamstowe, and had bad charge of it for many years.

He leaves a widow and two daughters, the eldest of whom is the Matron of the Somerset County Councils home for children at Cheddar.

The younger daughter, Mrs. H. F. Noad, was, for some years, at Bathford Infants' School, Her husband is the present sub-postmaster at Combe Down.

The service at the Mission Hall was conducted by Mr. Edwin Cross. assisted by Mr. C. M Martin. Mrs. R. W. Cornish was at the organ, and the hymns were “Jesu, Lover of my soul” and "Jesu keep me near the Cross," both favourites of the deceased.

Mr. Martin conducted the committal service at the graveside in Monkton Combe Church Cemetery.

The immediate mourners were Mrs. J. W. Charter (widow); Miss Charter and Mrs. H. F. Noad (daughters); Mr. H. F. Noad (son-in-law); Mr. W. Kellaway (cousin); Mrr, J. Noad and Mr. W. Noad.

Parish, Mrs. Elms (City Mission), Pastor R. G. and Mrs. Tucker, Mr. H Harris. Rev. E. Roberts (vicar of Combe Down). Mr. H. Norris (trustee). Mrs. Gerrish. Mr. A. Deverall, Mr. J. Raymont, Mrs. New, Mrs. Robertson.

The funeral arrangements carried out by Messrs. G. Mannings and Sons, Claverton Down, Bath.
