Obituary For Henry James Stennard

FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR. H. J. STENNARD

The funeral of the late Mr. H. J. Stennard, stone merchant, of Combe Down, took place at
Monkton Combe, on Saturday.

Many blinds were down, and shutters were up at Combe Down, which testified to the respect which was felt.

The cortege left the deceased's residence 1, Stanley-villa, shortly after 12 o'clock.

The coffin, which was of pannelled elm with brass fittings, was placed in an open hearse; on it was the inscription:

HENRY JAMES STENNARD,
Died Jan. 4, 1898; Aged 73.

Four of the bearers were men who had been employed by the deceased, and the other two
were nephews.

In the first carriage there were the Misses Stennard (daughters), Mr. Stennard (grandson), and Mrs. Massey (sister). In the second were the Misses Stennard (granddaughters), and Miss Massey (niece); in the third there were Mr. George Stiles and
Mr. W. Stiles (nephews), Mr. T. Stermard (cousin), and Master Chambury in the fourth were
Mr. W. H. Hoskins (minister at the Chapel, Combe Down), Mr. C. F. Harril (the deceased's
colleague as overseer), and Mr. W. S. Le Feuvre; in the fifth were Messrs. H. G. Montagn,
Chairman, A. Williams, W. Williams, and H. Wolle (Parish Councillors), and in the sixth were
Messrs. J. W. J. Watkins, C. Morris, W. Davis, and A. Wicks (also Parish Councillors), together with Mr. E. P. Page (Clerk to the Council).

There were several wreaths, and some of them were very handsome,

The service was conducted by the Rev. D. Lee Pitcairn, Vicar of Monkton Combe, in the absence from home of the Rev. S. B. Benson, Vicar of Combe
Down.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. G. Fisher, of Combe Down.
