Obituary For Henry Arthur Whately

Ex-champion runner dies, aged 102

MR. R. Henry Arthur Whatley, of Midford Castle, Bath, who won the Amateur Athletic Association's half-mile championship in 1878, has died at died at the age of 102.

His recipe for long life was temperate living - one cigar a day, to bed at six in his later years,
and an occasional stroll in the fresh air.

Mr. Whatley was the Oxford University half-mile champion, besides winning the A.A. championship, and once expressed small opinion of modern runners. "They should be able to do well." he declared. “Everything is laid on for them. We were real runners in. our day.”

On leaving university, he qualified as a solicitor and remained in practice in London until 1937. Two years later he bought Midford Castle which was built in 1700 in the shape of the ace of clubs the money spent on it having been won when an ace of clubs turned up in a game of cards.

During the last war, when she was staying at Badminton, the late Queen Mary visited Mr.
Whately at the castle and had tea with him.
