Obituary For Harry Avant Cawood

MR. H. A. CAWOOD DIES AT BATH

FAMILIAR COMBE DOWN FIGURE

The death is recorded at St. Martin's Hospital, Bath, of Mr. Harry Avant Cawood in his 80th year.

With his faithful companion-a white Sealyham-he has been a familiar figure on his daily walks around Combe Down, and the many. friends he had made during three years' residence there will miss the cheery word he had for everyone.

In his earlier days Mr. Cawood was a crack shot of the old Midland Rifle Club at Derby, an instructor in boxing with Derby Y.M.C.A., a keen cricketer and bowls player, and reports of the time record that he played a good game of football at the age of 50.

RAILWAY SERVICE

For nearly 45 years he was engaged in railway service, until his retirement in 1930 from the
position of chief of the Rolling Stock Superintendent's office at Derby.

A man of staunch principles in local administrative affairs, his enthusiasm for any cause in which he believed and fostered was stimulating-a tribute which political friends as well as opponents at Derby during the first 2 decades of this century will pay to his memory.

Since his life's work has been spent in the service of railways, it seems appropriate that his last journey should be taken over the iron way, and he will be buried tomorrow in the quiet churchyard of Allestree, near Derby, where he worshipped for 17 years.

He is survived by his younger son, Mr. C. R. Cawood and Mrs Cawood, of Greendown House Combe Down. Bath, and by a second daughter-in-law. Mrs Annie Cawood, of Leeds.
