DEATH OF THE REV. G. W. NEWNHAM.

The death st Corsham on Thursduy of the Rav. GeorgeWilliam Newnam, at the patriarchal age of 87, sfter aministry of sixty-two yeans, removes from the scene one who had been a familiar fiure in Bath for half a century, and an earnest and vigorous supporter. of. the Eivangelicyal party in the Charch life of that period.

Mr. Newnbam,was a son of the Inte Rev. William Moore Newnham. sometime Bursar of C.C.C, Oxford and-rector of Bassingham, Lincoln, and father of the Right Rev, J. A,Newnham, recently consecrated Bishop of Moosonee.

The subject of our notice waz born in 1806, gained a Scholarmbip at C.C.O. in 1828, took bis degree in 2nd ClassLit. Hum, 1827, aud was ordained at Wells in 1831.

Amonget his contemporarica at Oxford whose names figure on tho same class liste were the late Bishop Jeune, of Peterborongh, Bishop Jacobson, of Chichester, Canon Heurtley, afterwards Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity, Mr. Herman Merivale, and Mr. W, Butterfield, the architect of Keble College.

He was curate in charge of Coleford, Somerset, 1831-1840, and of Shaw, near Melkaham, from 1940-1842, in which year ho:accepted the incambency of Combe Down wherehe remained till 1877, combining with it the mother church of Monkton Combe from 1845-1863.

After his retirement to Corsham in the early part of 1877, Mr. Newnhamt took an active interest in all the work of the parish, and till quite recently assisted many of the neighbouring clergy for the Snuday services.

He had been a ataunch supporterof the C.M.S. since 1832, and for 21 years held the officeof Secretary to the Bath Clerical Society.

He was a frequent contributor to the correepondence columns of the Bath Chronicle, his signature of "Emeritus" being well- known.

His lanst letter appeared so recently as December 14, " Let no man take thy Crown".
