Obituary For Francis Edward Coombs

MONKTON COMBE MAN'S DEATH

Black-out Collision Has Fatal Result

Mr. Francis Edward Coombs, cabinet-maker, of 12, The Croft, Monkton Combe, who was badly injured in an accident in the black-out early on the morning of Boxing Day, succumbed to his injuries on Monday at St. Martin's Hospital, Bath.

Mr. Coombs, whose sister is a police woman in the Bath Police Force, was cycling down Ralph Allen's Drive about 7.30 a.m., when he collided with a pedestrian.

While lying in the roadway a motor-car driven by Mr. John Warlock, of Monkton Court, Monkton Combe, ran over Mr. Coombs, whom the driver did not see.

The pedestrian with whom Mr. Coombs collided was Mr. G. Rich, of Brassknocker Cottages, Brassknocker Hill. He also was taken to St. Martin's, suffering from concussion, abrasions and shock.

Mr. Coombs, who was 31 years of age, was an enthusiastic Rugby and cricket player. He had been a member of St. Mark's Football Club ever since he was 14.

He had been employed by Bath Artcraft Ltd., since he left school.

In 1936 he married, at Monkton Combe. Miss Doris Harris, and there is one child, Peter, aged a year and nine months.

Mr. Coombs was the youngest son of Mr. Francis Coombs, cabinet maker, of 21. Wells Road, Bath.

The inquest was opened on Wednesday. After evidence of identification was given by
deceased's brother, Kenneth Coombs, of West Avenue, Bath, the inquiry was adjourned till
Friday, when a verdict of Accidental Death was returned.
