Obituary For Edward Easterfield

HEADMASTER FOR THIRTY YEARS

DEATH OF MR. EDWARD EASTERFIELD

Old Monktonians throughout the world will learn with very sincere regret of the death of Mr. Edward Easterfield, M.A., who was the much- loved headmaster of Monkton Combe Junior School for thirty years.

By the people of Combe Down generally he will be greatly missed. He took a keen interest in village activities and was the unostentatious author of many benevolences.

He resided at Southfield, Church Road, where he passed away in his sleep early on Saturday. He had been confined to his bed for about a week. His age was 77.

Mr. Easterfield, a native of Doncaster, was for some years a house master at the Dean Close Junior School, Cheltenham.

In 1900 he became headmaster of the Junior School of Monkton Combe succeeding the Rev. J. W. Kearns, who became headmaster of the Senior School.

There were 40 boys when Mr. Easterfield took over the reins, and at the time of his retirement thirty years later, the number was 115.

Valuable Influence.

Not only was he a great headmaster socially, but obtained remarkably fine results in scholarship examinations.

His influence on the boys was of great value and hundreds of Monktonians look back with affection and gratitude to the years they spent in his charge.

During his long headmastership he was considerably helped by his sister, Miss Easterfield.

From the time of his retirement until his death he retained a warm interest in the School, and
rarely missed a public function there. He is survived by his sister, who, together with his
niece, resided with him at Southfield.

His brother, Sir Thomas Hill Easterfield, was Director of the Cawthron Institute of Scientific Research at Nelson, New Zealand, from 1919 to 1933. He was in England in 1935 and was a welcome visitor at one of the luncheons of the Rotary Club of Bath.
