Obituary For David Lee Pitcairn

MONKTON COMBE HISTORIAN - DEATH OF THE. REV. D, LEE . PITCAIRN

With deeply regret to announce the death, which occurred on Friday, at]:the age of 88, of the Rev. David: Lee Pitcairn, the historian of Combe Down and Monkton Combe -who resided at:1, “Laura Place, Bath.

Mr, Pitcairn was a man of high scholastic attainments. At Oxford he was a scholar of Magdalen College. His. first curacy was at the Church of St, Benet, Stepney, where he served from 1878-76.

Ho held one other curacy, at Chipping:Campden from 1876 till 1882, and in the following year he became Vicar of Monkton Combe, where he remained- until retirement in 1914.

During the intervening. period, he became well-known as a writer and lecturer on religious topics.

At one time Mr Pitcairn was chairman :of the Governors of Monkton Combe School, and at: to the time of his: death retained a seat on the board.

After retiring from the living, of Monkton Combe. he became associated with countless organisations and, good causes in Bath.

He was a keen follower of Bathy rugby and cricket, and only on Saturday last was at the Bath rugby match.

He was a member of the Committee of the Bath Literary and Scientific Institution, of the Bath and Somerset, Archeological Society, and of Dr. Bray’s Theological Library. His history of Combe Down and Monkton Combe is the standard work for that area.

To his widow will go: the sympathy of many friends in her bereavement.

The funeral will be at Bath Abbey on Wednesday afternoon at 12.50, the interment to follow at Monkton Combe cemetery,

SERVICE AT BATH

With the sun shining in a blue sky over the loveliness the autumn countryside, there was 'laid to rest on Wednesday afternoon in the beautiful churchyard through which he had passed so many times in life to service, the body of the historian of Combe Down and Monkton Combe, the Rev. David Lee Pitcairn, Vicar of Monkton Combe from 1883 to 1914.

Prior to the interment the funeral service was held in Bath Abbey, where a large congregation heard the Archdeacon of Bath (the Ven. S. A. Boyd) perform the last rites. The death of Mr. Pitcairn occurred at the age of 88, Friday, at his residence at 1, Laura Place, Bath. He was a man of high. scholastic attainments and Oxford was scholar Magdalen College.

ROBED CLERGY. The congregation for the service at the Abbey included representatives of the many public bodies and organisations with which had been associated. Over a dozen robed clergy walked the procession. They were: Preb. F. E. Murphy, Preb. D. Melville Ross (Rector of Claverton), Canon H. Foster-Pegg, the Revs. .1. A. Dodd. O. A. Bunbury (Master of St. John's Hospital), P. E. Warrington (Vicar of Combe), J. W. Kearns (former Vicar of Monkton Combe), E. Hay ward -Headmaster. Monkton Combe School), W. Jameson (Headmaster, M Combe Junior School), H. Cameron McNeil (rector of St. Michael's). E. Guy Hammond (Vicar St. James's). A. (Vicar of St. Mark's, and E. B. Howe (curate at Bath Abbey). Also in the procession were the churchwardens, Mr. F. E. Roberts and Mr. N. Devonshire-Jones, Mr. Finest Maynard was at the organ and the choir were attendance. After the sentences from the burial office had sung, the service continued with the singing the hymn, "Ten thousand times ten thousand.'' Then followed the chanting of Psalm 121, will lift mine eyes unto the hills." The Lesson was taken from the seventh chapter of Revelation, verses to 17, after which there was sung the hymn, "The King of Love my Shepherd is." Prayers were followed the Benediction and the service ended with the "Nunc Dimittis."

The mourners were Mrs. Miss Agnes Elverson. Major and Mrs. Elverson. Miss Edith Elverson, Mr. H. J. Mr. Noel and Mrs. Hugh Pitcairn, Mr. Alexander Pitcairn, General J Fisher, Col. and Mrs. G. H. Goddard.

The funeral arrangements were undertaken Messrs. F. and Co. New Bond Street. Bath.
