Obituary For Charles Parfitt
FUNERAL OF THE LATE DR. PARFITT.
The funeral of the Rev. Dr. Partitt, whose death is briefly noticed in our seventh page, took place yesterday at Midford.
The coffin, on which were placed many wreaths and crosses, was removed from Midford Castle at
eleven o'clock and was received at the chapel, in the grounds, which had been draped with crape, by the Rev. Joseph Davis, St. John's, Bath.
It was deposited in front of the altar, lighted candles being placed on each side. Bishop Clifford, of Clifton, was present, and also the following clergy-Monsignor Weld, Protonotary Apostelig of Isleworth;
Monsignor Williame, Prior Park; Canon Loughnan, St. Mary's, Bath; Canon Coxon, Bristol; Rev. J. Davis, St. John's, Bath, and the Rev. A. Russell, Bishop's Secretary.
Four scholars from Prior-park College comprised the choir.
Bishop Clifford and the clergy first recited Lauds, which was followed by requiem mass and absolutions.
Among those present at the ceremony were, the Marquisa da St. Agata Conolly, Messrs Charles,
James, and John Parfitt (nephews); Mr. G. J. Parfitt (cousin), Mr. J. Parfitt; Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. Hardman (nieces); Mr. J. Meister (nephew), Dr. McDermott, Dr. Stanley (Wellow), Major and Mrs. Berkeley, Messrs. Arnold (London), W. J. English,
James Day, John Hardman.
Several tenants and servants on the estate were also
present. The coffin was of polished oak, and bore a brass plate which stated that the deceased was Protonotary A postolic, domestic prelate of Pope Leo XIII, Canon Theologian of the Diocese of Clifton, Doctor of Divinity, and that he was born September 10th, 1816, and died 27th June, 1886.
The body was interred in the vault in the shagel, in
which Dr. Bagge, one of the late Bishops of Clifton, was buried 41 years ago.
The deceased Canon, we may add, was born at Bruton on 15th Sept., 1816, and, having
received his early education at the Grammar Sabool there, he left Bruton at the age of eighteen, and, two years later, on his birthday, he was received into the Roman Catholic Church at Prior Park by Bishop Baines.
He proceeded from Prior Park in October, 1838,
to the English College at Rome, and whilst there was promoted to sub-deaconship by Bishop Wiseman on the 9th of June, 1840, and to deaconship by Monsignore Piatto on 6th December of the same year.
In consequence of the departure of the Romans from
Prior Park, Bishop Baines summoned Mr. Parfitt to England, and he left Rome on the 28th November, 1842.
He was ordained priest on the 29th of the following month, and a few days after his return he was appointed Professor of Classica and Prefect of St.
Paul's College, Prior Park, and so continued until the death of Bishop Baines.
On the arrival of Dr, Baggs, Mr. Parfitt was confirmed President of St. Peter's, and Pope Gregory XVI. promoted him to the rank of one of his camerieri d'onore.
He retired from Prior Park in September,
1846, when he went to Midford.
On the formation of Clifton Chapter on 28th June, 1852, Dr. Parfitt was enrolled among its canons.
Condolences
