BATH SAPPER KILLED UNIT "BOMBED & GUNNED IN RAID"
COMRADES WOUNDED
An official telegram received by Mrs. Payton, of 5, Quarry Vale, Combe Down, Bath, conveys the sad news that her husband, who came through the last Great War with only slight wounds, has died as the result of burns and leg injuries received while France.
It is only three months since Sapper Arthur Ernest Payton joined the Pioneers Constructional Company the Royal Engineers, and it was within days of their 19th wedding anniversary that Mrs. Payton received the news of his death.
Sapper Payton was a corporal in the R.E. in the last war. Altogether he saw 15 years' service with his company various countries, including India and Ireland.
By trade he was a builder, and soon after the outbreak of the present war was working at Devizes.
The very bad weather at the beginning of the year resulted in his being laid off, so he decided, against the wishes of his wife, to join the Army once again.
He was 45 years of age, and had been residing in Quarry Vale, Combe Down, for some years.
There is a family , four young children, three sons, the eldest aged 11, and a four-year-old daughter.
